I'm currently looking for a used car, and one question keeps coming up in my mind: how can you really tell if a vehicle has been properly maintained? A clean exterior and polished interior are nice, but they don't necessarily reflect what's going on under the bonnet.
I've been browsing japanese used cars for sale because they're known for their reliability, but I still think maintenance history is one of the most important factors when choosing any used vehicle. A well-looked-after car with higher mileage often seems like a better option than a low-mileage one that's been neglected.
Here are a few things I always try to check before making a decision:
A complete and consistent service history.
Oil change and routine maintenance records.
MOT or inspection reports that show recurring issues.
Condition of tyres and whether they've worn evenly.
Signs of fluid leaks under the engine.
Brake condition and suspension performance during a test drive.
Clean engine bay without obvious signs of neglected maintenance.
I also think it's worth asking the seller detailed questions about how the car was used. A vehicle that's mostly done motorway miles and received regular servicing may be in much better condition than one that's spent years on short city trips without proper maintenance.
